Why do stupid ideas work?

Tesla in 2019, they introduced karaoke, arcade mode, a bio-weapon defense, and even a mode that makes farting sounds from the passenger seats.

Sounds stupid, right?

If you check social listening tools, you'll see how these features create more conversations compared to all the main competitors' functional features combined.

Why? People usually don't talk about things that are status quo.

But give them something absurd and fun to mock, and they'll share it like crazy.

So, why doesn't every company use these wild marketing ideas?

First off, a lot of people don't know about this strategy. Business owners and marketing teams often want quick, clear results.

These off-the-wall ideas are hard to measure, and in the world of marketing, storytelling, and branding, it's a matter of belief.

In my experience, both in corporations and startups, it's usually the company founders who believe in and enjoy these ideas.

CEOs and CMOs, often being more risk-averse and having less financial freedom, may not be as bold.

When company founders adopt these ideas, they often experience a tenfold return on investment.

Most importantly, it's just more fun.

Look around, and you'll see brands that use absurdity, illogicality, and craziness stand out. Conventional methods, despite being useful, often don't say much about your brand's identity. But it's the crazy, out-there ideas that define you.

These ideas say everything about you without you having to say anything.

They're effective, fun, and meant for the risk-takers and the bold.

Not for the faint-hearted, that's for sure.
